Iowa Real Estate License Requirements

The Iowa Real Estate Commission oversees all real estate matters in the state of Iowa. The types of real estate licenses the commission currently issues are salesperson and broker licenses.

The requirements to become a real estate agent [salesperson] or broker in Iowa are as follows:

SALESPERSON LICENSE REQUIREMENTS:

Applicants seeking an Iowa salesperson license must be at least 18 years old.

Applicant must submit fingerprints and undergo a criminal background check. Fingerprint packet may obtained from the Iowa Real Estate Commission. It is not required for the applicant to wait for the background check to be approved before applying for the license.

No prior real estate experience is necessary to obtain an Iowa salesperson license.

Prelicense education requirements for an Iowa salesperson license are as follows:
Complete a 60 hour prelicense education course.
Complete the following three courses:
12 hours of Buying Practices
12 hours of Listing Practices
12 hours of Developing Professionalism and Ethical Practices

Iowa Real Estate License Requirements

After completing the prelicense education requirements, applicant must pass the state portion of the salesperson exam with 28 correct answers and the national portion with 56 correct answers . The national portion of the exam consists of 80 questions with a 120 minute time limit. The state portion consists of 40 questions with a 60 minute time limit.

An Iowa salesperson license application must be submitted within six months of passing the exam. Applicant must also submit proof of sponsorship by a licensed broker in Iowa and ubmit proof that applicant has Errors & Omission insurance.

All licensees must complete 36 hours of continuing education courses every three years, which must include the following:
8 hours of Law Update
4 hours of ethics
24 hours of electives

Applicants licensed to practice law in Iowa are exempt from the prelicense education requirements.

Iowa has reciprocal agreements with the following states:
Arkansas
Georgia
Louisiana
Massachusetts
Mississippi
North Dakota
West Virginia

Fees to obtain an Iowa salesperson license include:
Exam Fee: $100
Salesperson License Fee: $125


BROKER LICENSE REQUIREMENTS:

Applicants seeking an Iowa broker license must be at least 18 years old.

At least 24 months of active real estate experience within the past 24 months is required.

Applicant must submit fingerprints and undergo a criminal background check. Fingerprint packet may obtained from the Iowa Real Estate Commission. It is not required for the applicant to wait for the background check to be approved before applying for the license.

Prelicense education requirements for an Iowa broker license are as follows:
Complete 72 hours of broker prelicense education courses within the past 24 months.

After completing the prelicense education requirements, applicant must pass the state portion of the broker exam with 30 correct answers and the national portion with 60 correct answers. The national portion of the exam consists of 80 questions with a 120 minute time limit. The state portion consists of 40 questions with a 60 minute time limit.

An Iowa broker license application must be submitted within six months of passing the exam. Applicant must also submit current salesperson wall license with application and submit proof that applicant has Errors & Omission insurance.
